One of the initiatives we are particularly proud to be associated with is the Mai Ndombe project. This project is immensely significant in its efforts to achieve its objectives and bring about positive changes in the lives of the local communities. By focusing on preserving vital rainforest habitats, the project contributes to environmental conservation and supports the livelihoods of the area's residents.
Project Background
Launched in 2011, this project is located in the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, within the Congo Basin, the world's second-largest rainforest after the Amazon. Managed by Wildlife Works, the Mai Ndombe project exemplifies the potential of REDD+ (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries) initiatives and is a premier model of success.
This initiative mitigates forest and biodiversity loss and significantly contributes to the prosperity of the local community through essential local investments. It has safeguarded 300,000 hectares of critical habitats for Bonobos, Pangolins, and Forest Elephants, as well as some of the world's most important wetlands surrounding Lake Mai Ndombe. Moreover, the project has a profound impact on the lives of residents, improving access to education and essential medical care.
